Software test automation can be even better with geolocation testing from the likes of popular developer tools specialist BrowserStack.

Enabling geolocation testing of your mobile apps and websites with BrowserStack means users can test location-based scenarios on a cloud of 2,000 real devices and desktop browsers with GPS and IP geolocation. JQuery teams use BrowserStack – as have developers for Harvard University and Wikimedia.

There are different aspects to geolocation. First up and most obvious is probably localisation — checking if language, spelling, currency and times adjust correctly according to location. This can be built on with geotargeting – enabling a website or app to deliver a broader range of content that’s specific to the user’s location.

Mobile apps also need appropriate “geofencing”, an ability to trigger the right notification when a user crosses a predefined geographical perimeter, so testing for this is valuable also.

Then there’s testing for geotagging, ensuring that a website or mobile app tags media such as photos, videos and social posts with the right location, and that users are able to find the media based on correct geotagging. Any geoblocks that restrict website or mobile app access based on user location can and should also be tested.

With BrowserStack, users can do it all in one place, setting any real device in its cloud to any location using GPS and simulating user behaviour with private IPs located in more than 45 different countries, across different browsers and devices.

In other news, BrowserStack last week acquired visual testing and review platform Percy — adding yet another string to its bow.

Ritesh Arora, CEO and co-founder at BrowserStack, said: “Percy helps teams automate visual testing. It captures screenshots, compares them against the baseline, and highlights visual changes. Modern agile teams at Basecamp, Canva, Shopify, among others, rely on Percy to ship a pixel-perfect UI with every release.”

Arora praised the Percy platform, which pioneered DOM snapshotting and has advanced parallelisation capabilities. Check out this video.

“With this acquisition, developers and QA teams can run everything from visual tests to manual and automated functional tests on BrowserStack’s infrastructure and ship high-quality software at speed,” Arora said.
